Vergiß jetzt, o Kindlein, dein’ Kummer, dein Leid,
dass du da musst leiden im Stall auf der Heid’.

The melody for “Es wird scho glei dumpa” is based on an old Austrian hymn that honors Mary (Maria). The words and music appeared in print for the first time in 1884 in Kripplgsangl und Kripplspiel, with Austrian dialect lyrics credited to Anton Reidinger (1839–1912), a Catholic priest who lived in the western region (Innviertel) of the province of Upper Austria (Oberösterreich). In 2012 a researcher determined that, contrary to common assumptions, Reidinger was also the composer of the music. In standard German the carol’s title is “Es wird schon gleich dunkel.” In the original dialect versions the last word in the title was spelled “dumper,” but today it is usually spelled “dumpa.”

This Austrian carol is still popular today, and is often performed by choirs and other performers during the Christmas season. See the videos below for some examples.
