The Bauhaus school of design was founded in Weimar, Germany by Walter Gropius in 1919. Thus, the year 2009 marked the 90th anniversary of the institution’s founding.
In November 2010, Berlin’s Bauhaus-Archiv (Bauhaus Archive) turned 50. Established in 1960 with rescued materials provided by Walter Gropius from the US, the Bauhaus Archive today functions as both a museum open to the public and an archive for researchers.
Originally, this photo gallery was created to mark those two artistic and cultural milestones. It offers views of the various Bauhaus buildings and related landmarks in Germany. Over the course of its existence, from 1919 to 1933, the Bauhaus in Germany moved its home from Weimar to Dessau to Berlin. Banned by the Nazis in 1933, the school then found its exile home in Chicago. Later in Germany, beginning in the 1960s, the Bauhaus Archive was supposed have its home in Darmstadt, but it finally ended up in Berlin in 1979 – just as it had in 1933, but with a happier result.
