The Neumagener Weinschiff (wine ship of Neumagen) on display in the Rheinisches Landesmuseum in Trier. Four of these Roman sandstone Weinschiffe were discovered in Neumagen, Germany in the late 1800s. Dating from about 220 A.D., the stone ships — laden with wine barrels and a symbolic crew — were used in pairs to mark the graves of distinguished wine merchants. A replica also stands in Neumagen-Drohn (on the Mosel), which claims to be Germany’s oldest wine-producing town.
