East Side Gallery 2009 - Japan

Thomas Klingenstein’s “Detour to the Japanese Sector” is one of the first completed sections for the 2009 restoration (Sanierung) of the East Side Gallery — seen here as it looked in late July 2009. Klingenstein grew up in East Berlin and is one of the artists who have fought to preserve this historic section of the Berlin Wall. Imprisoned for dissent when he was 19, this painting was inspired by his childhood desire to live in Japan, just one of the exotic places he and other East Germans were not allowed to visit.
