This is what the 2008-2009 restoration wants to fix. The original chipped, peeling, and graffiti-covered art will be removed in order to basically rebuild and resurface the crumbling Wall — which was not made of top quality material to begin with. The new surface will thus be better suited to painting and the original artists will duplicate their works, so they will be as authentic as possible. At least five of the 1990 artists have died in the intervening 18 years, but other artists will attempt to reproduce their panels. (Photo: October 2007)
