The Tempelhof terminal is seen in the background in this view from the Berlin Airlift memorial at “Airlift Square” (Platz der Luftbrücke). The three “fork prongs” of the concrete arch represent the three air corridors used by the planes in the Airlift (1948-49). A similar matching arch is located at the former Rhein Main airbase near Frankfurt. The flower wreaths at the base of the monument were left as part of the May 2008 ceremonies commemorating the 60th anniversary of the beginning of the Berlin Airlift in 1948.
