Tempelhof Airport, viewed from the end of one of its runways. During the Berlin Airlift (1948-1949) these runways were constantly busy. In recent years Berlin’s historic airfield has been an underused commuter airport and a drain on the capital city’s budget. The airport officially ceased operations on October 30, 2008. Plans for future use of the landmark-protected building and the vast Tempelhof complex are still up in the air. This photo was taken in May 2008.
