A Travel Guide to Germany (UK)

Germany is situated in Central Europe and is only one or two hours flying time from the UK, depending on which part of the UK you leave and which city in Germany is your destination. It is also possible to travel by road and sea, as Germany boasts a fairly large coast line, with Hamburg in particular a large port. The currency used in Germany is the euro. The main language, as you would expect, is German. However, English is widely spoken in Germany, too.

Germany is an extremely versatile place to visit as it caters for the tastes of a variety of travellers. Not only are there super beach resorts to be found, but the cities are very interesting and entertaining, and you will find many pretty little villages throughout the countryside. There is some wonderful scenery and a great way to see this is, for example, a cruise along the River Rhine or a tour through the hills of the Black Forest region.

Amongst the most popular cities to visit are Berlin, Hanover, Frankfurt, Dresden, Düsseldorf, Munich, and Stuttgart. Music lovers will find a trip to Würzburg for the Mozart Festival a must. The German people are very proud of their heritage and the city of Munich is home to sites illustrating the history of the Bavarian Royal Family. Throughout Germany you will find magnificent castles and palaces, and the architecture of these buildings is very distinctive. Germany is a country steeped in history dating back hundreds of years through to the World Wars I and II. There are many museums covering every aspect of this history, including German politics. On a lighter note, many of the German cities have excellent variety shows and you will find very good food and wine as well as a full range of their famous beer where ever you travel in Germany.

Accommodation varies from top class hotels to pensions — the choice is yours. But as you would expect from an international tourist destination, the selections offered are endless, and you should easily find some attractive lodging offers.

Germany also hosts several beer and wine festivals throughout the year, details of which can all be found on the official tourist website. The German Christmas markets are also a very popular event, as they are set in charming old towns and it is possible to find many unusual and charming gifts as well as some delicious items to eat and drink at these markets. Both the arts and sport are also very keenly supported in Germany and the museums and stadia are excellent.

Whether it is the cultural history, the countryside, vibrant cities or beach resorts, the warmth of the German people guarantees a friendly welcome to all its visitors, many of whom return again and again. See our Country Data and Travel pages for more about travel and tourism in Germany.
