How Do the Universities Rank? (2009)
The annual Times Higher Education survey of the Top 200 World Universities (2009) is a good barometer for seeing how universities around the globe compare to each other. In the rankings below, we have edited the list to concentrate on universities in the three main German-speaking countries.
The Times Top 200 list is dominated by universities in the UK and the US. The top 10 world universities in 2009, with country and (rank) in the previous year:

Times Higher Education Rankings: Top Universities in Austria, Germany, and Switzerland
The rankings below are listed by country. The first number is the 2009 rank of the university named. The number in ( ) is that university’s rank in 2008.
AUSTRIA 2009
- 132 University of Vienna (115)
Vienna, the only university in Austria to make the Top 200 list in 2009, has fallen in rank for the last three years. It dropped from 115th in 2008 to 132nd in 2009. In 2007 Vienna ranked 85th.
GERMANY 2009
- 55 Technical University of Munich (78)
- 57 Heidelberg University (57)
- 94 Free University of Berlin (137)
- 98 Ludwig-Maximilians University, Munich (93)
- 122 Freiburg University (147)
Tied with University of Maryland, College Park - 146 Humboldt University of Berlin (139)
- 149 Eberhard Karls University of Tübingen (155)

Of the 10 German universities on the Times Higher Education list above, four have a better rank in 2009, compared to the previous year: Munich (TH) (55/78), Berlin’s Free University (94/137), Freiburg (122/147) and Tübingen (149/155). New to the list in 2009: Aachen and Karlsruhe. Heidelberg held its 57th rank, but Göttingen dropped 20 places (186/166). Berlin’s Humboldt University also dropped from 139 to 146. Three German institutions on the 2008 list dropped out of the Top 200 in 2009: The Technical University of Berlin and the universities in Frankfurt and Stuttgart.

Bern, Geneva and Lausanne (university), dropped in rank, while the other four on the list have a better rank in 2009 than in 2008. Note: Basel, Bern and Zurich are in the German-speaking region of Switzerland, while the other cities listed are French-speaking.
