How Do the Universities Rank? (2012)

The annual Times Higher Education survey of the Top 400 World Universities (2012) is a good barometer for seeing how universities around the globe compare to each other. In the rankings below, we have edited the list to concentrate on universities in the three main German-speaking countries.

Top 100 Universities by Reputation - 2012
The Swiss Federal Institute of Technology Zurich ranks 22nd; the University of Munich is 42nd. As in previous years, there are only four German universities on the list. Berlin's Humboldt University and Munich's Technische Universität are in the 61-70 group; Heidelberg is in the 71-80 group. Austria has no university in the reputation rankings. (See below.)

As in previous years, the Times Higher Education list continues to be dominated by universities in the US and the UK. The only German-speaking university in the top 15 is the Swiss technical school ETH Zürich (15th). The top 15 world universities in 2012, with country and score:

Times Higher Education Rankings: Top Universities in Austria, Germany, and Switzerland

The rankings below are listed by country and the 2012 world rank of each university in that nation. For 2012, the Times Higher Education rankings (in partnership with Thomson Reuters) list the top 400 institutions. Schools in the Top 200 also have their score listed. However, the rankings for 201 to 300 are in groups of 25, without a specific rank or score within each section. The rankings for 301 to 400 are in groups of 50, without a specific rank or score within each section. Underlined universities are also listed in the 2012 Top 100 Universities by Reputation.

AUSTRIA 2012

  • 139 University of Vienna (only Austrian Uni in the top 200)

  • 201-225 group University of Innsbruck
  • 251-275 group Karl-Franzens-Universität Graz
  • 251-275 group Johannes Kepler Universität Linz
  • 301-350 group Vienna University of Technology

In 2012 Vienna was the only university in Austria to make the world Top 200, but it has fallen in rank for the last several years. It dropped from 115th in 2008 to 132nd in 2009 to 195th in 2010. In 2007 Vienna ranked 85th.
