Dining | Often the best restaurant in a German or Austrian city is the Ratskeller or city hall (cellar) restaurant. This is Vienna’s Rathaus (city hall) with a red canopy over the entrance to the Ratskeller restaurant.

Austria | The postcard-perfect old town (Altstadt) section of Burghausen in Bavaria (Bayern) on the Austrian border. Burghausen lies on the Salzach River, the same stream that flows through Salzburg, some 100 km (62 mi) to the southwest. The green countryside on the other side of the river belongs to Austria. Burghausen lays claim to “Germany’s longest castle” (“die längste Burg Deutschlands”). This photo was taken from the one-kilometer-long castle high above the Altstadt. > View Photo > Buy Photo
Dining | This Marché restaurant is in a shopping center in Vienna’s downtown pedestrian-zone shopping district. Diners can create their own menu from a variety of food stations surrounding the central dining area. > View Photo > Buy Photo

Telecommunications | This credit card telephone booth is located in Vienna. Credit card phones are still fairly rare in Austria and are usually found only in large cities and at airports. The red sign translates: “This phone can save lives, don’t destroy it!” Also see the Austrian coin phone photo below. More on our Phone tips page.
