Berlin Wall memorial crosses

These white memorial crosses once stood next to the Reichstag building (in the background). They bear the names of the many victims (Maueropfer) killed by East German border guards while trying to escape over or under the Berlin Wall from 1961 to 1989. When the Reichstag building was renovated in 1998, the crosses disappeared, just like most of the Berlin Wall itself. But a new set of crosses (Photo) can now be found at the nearby Spreebogen (“Spree bend”) government complex.
