A detail view of Birgit Kinder’s newly renovated painting at the East Side Gallery in August 2000. This image has become a well known symbol of the opening of the Wall in 1989. It shows an East German Trabant (Trabi) car bursting through the Berlin Wall. The Trabi’s license plate bears the date of the day when the Wall came down. To see this painting as it looked seven years later, see the 2007 photo.
