East Side Gallery Photos

These photos of Berlin’s East Side Gallery were taken in the summer of 2000, soon after the completion of a restoration project designed to refurbish the artwork on this section of the former Berlin Wall. With the cooperation of the artists from the original 1990 project, about a third of the Gallery was restored. Unfortunately, that left another 2/3 of the Gallery in shabby disrepair. Some 15 years have now gone by since the original Gallery was completed, and like any structure, this section of the Berlin Wall is showing its age.

High-res versions of the photographs you see here (plus many more you don’t see) are available for use in print and electronic media at very reasonable rates. For details and purchase information, see Photos for Purchase.

Then and now. Two views of the famous “Communist Kiss” painting: Fellow communists Erich Honecker and Leonid Brezhnev kissing each other on the mouth. One shows the work as it appeared in 1996, the other shows how it has suffered and how it looked in August 2000.

A detail view of Birgit Kinder’s newly renovated painting at the East Side Gallery. This image has become a well known symbol of the opening of the Wall in 1989.
