The East Side Gallery in Berlin

Our early photos of Berlin’s East Side Gallery were taken at various times — beginning in 1996 and then in the summer of 2000, soon after the completion of the first restoration project designed to refurbish the artwork on this section of the Berlin Wall. Our more recent East Side Gallery photos date from 2007, 2008, and July 2009.

The 2009 Restoration • East Side Gallery
Beginning in 1992, there have been various major and minor efforts to keep the East Side Gallery from deteriorating. (For details, see our East Side Gallery Timeline.) With the cooperation of many of the artists from the original 1990 project, about a third of the Gallery was restored in 2000. Unfortunately, a lack of full funding left another 2/3 of the Gallery in shabby disrepair. As the years have gone by since the original Gallery was painted, this section of the Wall on the banks of the Spree river in Berlin-Friedrichshain is showing its age, like any structure exposed to the elements. As my 2007/2008 photos show, it was a sorry sight then. Most of the original art was either covered with graffiti or peeling away. The 2008-2009 restoration, the best-funded such project in the Gallery’s history, began in October 2008. The goal was to get the Gallery ready for the 20th anniversary of the collapse of the Wall in November 2009. Funds were budgeted for the project, but at least six of the 118 original artists have died since the Gallery was completed in 1990. See our latest photos of the 2009 restoration.
