  • PHOTO 7 | Die Straße des 17. Juni
The Avenue of the 17th of June, as seen from the top of the Victory Column (die Siegessäule). The avenue’s name commemorates a workers' uprising that took place in the German Democratic Republic in 1953. In the distance: the Brandenburg Gate and the TV tower.
  • PHOTO 8 | Reichstag Dome Just After Sunset
Designed by British architect Sir Norman Foster, the Reichstag’s new transparent dome is open to the public until midnight (last entry at 11:00 pm).
  • PHOTO 9 | Reichstag Dome by Day - Sir Norman Foster’s Kuppel (dome) atop the Reichstag parliament building has become one of Berlin’s top tourist attractions.
  • PHOTO 10 | Sunday in Berlin - This fountain on the Breitscheidplatz is a focal point for the area around the Kaiser-Wilhelm-Gedächtniskirche (Memorial Church) just off of Berlin’s famous Kurfürstendamm.

  • PHOTO 12 | Galeries Lafayette - The sparkling glass interior of the Galeries Lafayette department store. The Galeries Lafayette store at the intersection of Friedrichstraße and Französische Straße opened in 1996.
  • PHOTO 13 | A Closer Look - Although covered with glass, the Reichstag dome is open to the air with a louvered overhang. The top of the dome is also open to the elements. Sir Norman Foster’s design is intended to convey an open government.
  • PHOTO 14 | Old and New - The German flag flies over the historic Reichstag—old and new. The original was completed in 1894, the renovation just over a century later.
  • PHOTO 15 | View from the Dome - A view from the Reichstag dome. Visitors to the terrace that surrounds the dome have wonderful views of Berlin’s central district (Mitte). We can see the Spree river and the Friedrichsstraße S-Bahn station.
