Berlin Wall memorial crosses

This new memorial for the many Berlin Wall victims (Maueropfer) killed by East German border guards is reminiscent of the white crosses that once stood near the nearby Reichstag building (Photo) for the 191 people who died attempting to escape East Berlin. The Marie-Elisabeth-Lüders-Haus (with the parliamentary library) across the river here at the Spreebogen (“Spree bend”) government complex stands on what was once a no-man’s-land bordered by the Wall.
