Berlin Gate by night

Das Brandenburger Tor, the Brandenburg Gate by night. Designed by Carl G. Langhans, the only Berlin city gate that stands today was completed in 1791. On October 4, 2000 this famous symbol of Berlin went under wraps for its third major renovation since the war. The first was in 1958, just three years before the Berlin Wall would block any access to it. After the Wall fell in 1989, both the gate and the Quadriga figure on top underwent a second extensive refurbishment in 1991. This view was photographed in August 2000 from Pariser Platz on the east side.
