Tempelhof was the American military air base and the center of Berlin Airlift operations in 1948-49. Tempelhof’s long history includes a 19-minute flight by the Wright Brothers in 1909. In 1923 the former airfield and parade ground became Berlin’s main airport. The Tempelhof “Zentral-Fughafen” facility, originally built as a Nazi showcase in the 1930s, was a center for business and commuter flights until it closed down in October 2008.
