An excerpt from The German Way by Hyde Flippo
The author owes a debt of gratitude to many people who not only helped make this book possible but also made it better. My German "editor" and cultural consultant, Holger Freese in Umkirch bei Freiburg, was not only the first person to see the book in its primordial form, but also became one of the most involved over the long term. His help and encouragement were invaluable. My two friends and consultants, the Austrian Herbert Kernecker and Robert Egloff of Switzerland, helped make the book's coverage to those German-speaking lands more accurate. Many others too numerous to mention emerged from cyberspace via CompuServe and the Internet to help with this project. Most notable among the many “CompuSurfers” in the Deutschland Online, European, and Foreign Language forums would be Maico Jäniche, a Berliner (“Aus dem grünen Köpenick”) whose words often appeared on my computer screen to offer valuable information and insightful comments when I needed them. Others who helped by sharing their experience and knowledge include Bev Laflamme, Ted Bissel, and Christian Feldhaus, Dan Depolito, and Geri Spang. I also want to thank many other good friends in Austria, Germany, and Switzerland who over the years have all helped me to better appreciate the rich and varied culture of the German-speaking world. I would also like to add a personal thank-you to my wife Cheryl, whose support and patience played a vital role in the writing of The German Way and the creation of this Web site.
